Where to Stay in Ambergris Caye: 7 Things to Know Before You Book

Ambergris Caye has more than one kind of island stay. You can be close to San Pedro’s shops and restaurants, settle into a quieter spot farther down the coast, or stay near the lagoon and plan for a little more travel. The right choice depends on how you want your days to feel, and how much getting around you’re happy to do.

Before you book, here are seven practical things to consider.

1. Choose your location, not just your room

San Pedro is the island’s main town, with restaurants, shops, tour operators, and transport connections. Staying nearby can make it easier to head out for dinner or arrange a reef trip.

Farther south, the pace tends to be quieter, with more room to relax between outings. Belize Seaside Casitas is on the south side of the island, about five miles from San Pedro Town. It’s a peaceful base with the sand just outside the casitas, while town remains within reach by golf cart.

Some travelers also choose areas north of town or around Secret Beach, a lagoon-side destination on the island’s west coast. These locations can offer a different atmosphere, but you’ll want to ask about road access and how you’ll get to restaurants, tours, and town.

A useful question to ask any host: How far is the property from the places I expect to visit, and what’s the easiest way to get there?

2. Ask what “beachfront” means for that property

A beachfront label can describe very different shorelines. Some properties have sand by the door; others may have a dock, a narrow strip of beach, or shoreline conditions that change with the season.

Before booking, check recent property photos and ask what the beach is like during your travel dates. If swimming from the shore is important to you, ask specifically about access and current conditions. Sargassum can affect parts of the Caribbean coast at certain times of year, and conditions vary from one place to another.

At Belize Seaside Casitas, the casitas sit right by the sand. There’s also a pool on the property, so you can enjoy a swim without planning an outing.

3. Plan how you’ll get around

Golf carts are a common way to explore Ambergris Caye, especially if you’re staying outside central San Pedro. They make it easier to visit shops, restaurants, and different parts of the island at your own pace.

For a stay on the south side, it’s helpful to plan on a cart. Belize Seaside Casitas is about a 20-minute golf-cart ride from downtown, and we can help arrange a rental. Roads can be bumpy, particularly after rain, so take your time and check the route with your host.

If you’re comparing places, ask whether a golf cart is essential, whether rentals can be arranged, and how the property handles arrival and luggage. The Belize Tourism Board’s guide to getting around outlines the main ways to travel around Belize, including local flights and water taxis.

4. Leave time to plan your arrival

Many visitors reach Ambergris Caye by taking a domestic flight from Belize City to San Pedro or traveling by water taxi. Schedules and connection times can vary, so check them against your international arrival, especially if you land later in the day.

You can review routes and schedules directly with Tropic Air or check water-taxi information through the Belize Tourism Board. Before you book, ask your accommodation how to get from the airport or dock to the property and whether someone can help coordinate the final leg.

At Belize Seaside Casitas, our local host Luis can help with arrival and meet-and-greet arrangements. A little coordination before you travel can make that first island afternoon feel much more settled.

5. Match the accommodation to your group

For a couple or solo traveler, a private casita can give you a comfortable home base without the scale of a large resort. Look closely at the details you’ll use every day: bed size, kitchenette, bathroom, storage, and outdoor space.

The Scuba Room and Tarpon Room are each 336 square feet, with a queen bed, kitchenette, and private bathroom. The Tarpon Room has a vaulted Belizean hardwood ceiling and sea views; the Scuba Room has a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower and his-and-hers sinks.

For friends traveling together, consider whether everyone wants their own private space. Booking the Casita Duo gives a group of up to four both casitas, each with its own queen bed and bathroom, as well as the pool and Seaside Lounge. You can share the property while still having a room of your own.

6. Think about the kind of days you want

Ambergris Caye is a good fit for travelers who want to balance water adventures with unplanned downtime. You might spend one day snorkeling or scuba diving, another fishing, and another close to home with a book and a slow lunch.

At Belize Seaside Casitas, kayaks and paddle boards are available, and there’s a pool for a quieter day on the property. The Seaside Lounge’s rooftop terrace is a comfortable place to watch the sky change at sunrise or sunset, or simply take a break from the sun.

We can also help guests ask about fishing trips, beach massages, hair braiding, and golf-cart rentals. You can explore these options on our experiences page. If a particular activity matters to your trip, ask about availability and booking details before you arrive.

7. Check the season and the booking details

Belize is warm year-round, but weather and shoreline conditions can vary by season. The drier months are generally from late fall through spring, while the wetter season overlaps with the Atlantic hurricane season. If you’re traveling during the wetter months, it’s worth checking cancellation terms and leaving a little flexibility around flights, boats, and tours.

Before confirming any accommodation, review what’s included, the payment and cancellation policies, and any age or group requirements. If safety or travel advisories are relevant to your plans, consult current information from an official source such as the U.S. Department of State’s Belize travel advisory.

A quieter island home base

The best place to stay on Ambergris Caye is the one that fits your preferred rhythm. If you want to be steps from town, choose a central location. If you’d rather have a quieter retreat and don’t mind using a golf cart, consider staying farther south.

Our beachfront casitas offer a small-scale, comfortable place to return to after a day on the water or an evening in San Pedro. You can compare the Scuba Room and Tarpon Room, read our frequently asked questions, or get in touch if you’d like help thinking through the details of your stay.
